With the release of DJI Terra V5.0, DJI introduces a comprehensive overhaul of its sales, licensing, and update policy. This update aims to simplify the licensing structure, increase transparency for users, and enhance access to the latest features — all while preserving flexibility for professionals across different industries.
Here’s what you need to know:
A Simplified Licensing Structure
DJI has streamlined the licensing options in Terra V5.0 to make them more accessible and easier to understand. The new lineup includes just two core license types:
- DJI Terra V5.0 Standard – equivalent to the previous Pro license.
- DJI Terra V5.0 Flagship – a continuation of the previous Electricity version, includes all the features of Standard plus: the new Gaussian Splatting technology, cluster computing, and advanced inspection scenarios, particularly for the energy sector.
“Truly Permanent” Licenses with Transparent Upgrade Policies
The Permanent version of DJI Terra V5.0 is now positioned as Truly Permanent, meaning a genuinely permanent license with no hidden fees. Users with permanent Standard or Flagship licenses are entitled to free updates to the latest software versions. However, in the case of major platform upgrades, an additional fee may still apply.
Automatic License Conversion
All previously purchased and currently active Permanent Pro licenses will be automatically converted to the new Standard license at no extra cost by updating to version 5.0.
All previously purchased and currently active Permanent Electricity licenses will be automatically converted to the new Flagship license at no extra cost by updating to version 5.0.
Both new versions (Standard and Flagship) can be used without any update or maintenance fees. New and existing users only need to download and install the latest version from the official website to upgrade their existing Pro or Electricity version to the corresponding Standard or Flagship version at no additional cost.
Upgrading from Standard to Flagship
Upgrading from Standard to Flagship in V5.0 is paid, with the cost roughly equivalent to buying a new Standard license:
Standard × 2 = Flagship
Annual Subscription Users: Important Upgrade Notice
If you currently hold an annual Terra Pro subscription, you are eligible for a free upgrade to Terra Standard (Annual).
However, if you choose to upgrade from Standard (Annual) to Flagship (Annual), the following policy applies:
- A new license period starts from the moment of upgrade.
- Remaining time on your Standard subscription will not carry over to Flagship.
Example:
If you used 5 months of a 12-month Standard/Pro license and then upgrade to Flagship, the remaining 7 months of Standard are forfeited, and a new 12-month Flagship period begins.
Refunds for Unused Upgrade & Maintenance Fees
DJI is offering refunds for unused Upgrade and Maintenance Fees paid between 2021 and the present.
To be eligible, the upgrade must not have been activated.
Deadline to request refunds: August 31, 2025
To apply, contact DJI Customer Service directly.
Device Binding and Offline Version Policy
- Both Standard and Flagship licenses are bound to a single device.
- Licenses are available in both online and offline formats.
- Online and offline activation options are supported.
However, note the following change:
- Upgrading to Offline versions is no longer supported.
- For example, Standard Permanent can be upgraded to Flagship Permanent, but cannot be upgraded to Standard Permanent (Offline).
- Standard Permanent Offline can, if necessary, be upgraded to Flagship Permanent Offline.
Conclusion
DJI Terra V5.0 represents a significant step forward in software accessibility and user experience. With simplified licensing, automatic upgrades, and a transparent update policy, DJI is making it easier for professionals to deploy and maintain their aerial mapping and inspection solutions — especially in critical sectors such as energy, construction, and infrastructure.
